DESCRIPTION:Grab your magnifying glass and join us for a fun-filled walk around the nature reserve this half term! Discover the secret world of the harvest mouse – the UK’s tiniest rodent – and learn how these little creatures live. Become a Harvest Mouse Explorer this half term\, as you search in the grasses for abandoned nests\, spot signs of wildlife\, and try out real survey skills used by scientists. You’ll even be helping the Mammal Society’s National Harvest Mouse Survey – so your adventure has a real purpose! \nPerfect for curious kids and families who love the outdoors. Children must be accompanied by their adult at all times. \nFor more info: https://mammal.org.uk/current-research/national-harvest-mouse-survey \nNormal parking charges apply. Under 4s free. \nThe NVMYG has been formed to inspire young people (under age 30) to learn about mammals and take action to protect them. Young people will be able spend time outdoors\, meet like-minded people\, and develop their skills to become citizen scientists and active conservationists. The group has been set up in response to\, and with\, local young people who have a passion for nature and is part of the local network of the Mammal Society\, Britain’s leading charity devoted to the science-led conservation of mammals.\nFor more information\, visit: https://stanwicklakes.org.uk/mammal-group/

SUMMARY:Wild About Harvest Mice (age 11-17)
DESCRIPTION:This event is designed for ages 11-17 in partnership with the Nene Valley Mammal Youth Group.\nYoung people attending this even must be accompanied by their adult at all times. Accompanying adults go free. \nJoin us for a hands-on Harvest Mouse Survey and help make a real difference for wildlife. Learn how to identify suitable habitat\, search for harvest mouse nests\, and collect valuable data that contributes to a national citizen science project. No previous experience is needed – just an interest in nature and a willingness to explore. This is a great opportunity to develop practical wildlife survey skills\, connect with like-minded people\, and take positive action for conservation. Every survey helps improve our understanding of harvest mouse populations and helps us to protect the harvest mouse population at Stanwick Lakes. \nFor more information about the national Harvest Mouse survey: https://mammal.org.uk/current-research/national-harvest-mouse-survey \nThe NVMYG has been formed to inspire young people (under age 30) to learn about mammals and take action to protect them. SUMMARY:Nest Box Talk
DESCRIPTION:Did you know\, we have nearly 40 nest boxes at Stanwick Lakes\, providing vital nesting spaces for birds? This gives us the chance to monitor the bird population on the reserve and contribute data to national bird recording schemes. \nOn Saturday 14th November at 1.30pm\,  we will be hosting a talk on by local ornithologist and BTO-licensed nest recorder\, Ian Wrisdale in the Visitor Centre at Stanwick Lakes. The talk will take a behind-the-scenes look at nest box recording\, why it matters\, what data is collected\, and how it contributes to long-term bird conservation. Ian will also share practical advice on how to put up\, position\, and maintain nest boxes\, helping you make the most of them in your own garden or green space. \nThe talk is suitable for adults and young scientists aged 10+ with an interest in nature. \nTickets are £6 for adults and £3 for children

SUMMARY:Guided Mushroom Walks led by Mycologist Tom Haddon
DESCRIPTION:Fungi are the cornerstones of ecosystems across the world and mushrooms are the enigmatic and ephemeral fruits of these vitally important organisms. Whether they are exchanging nutrients with plants or breaking down dead material for the next generation\, they are an essential partner to an estimated 90% of all plant species and are found on every continent on Earth. \nStanwick Lakes is home to many species of fungi\, with many only found in specific grassland and woodland habitats. During this 2-hour walk\, time will be spent learning which habitats may be home to which fungi and then these habitats will be explored to find and identify mushrooms. Some may be tiny\, with dozens of mushrooms inhabiting a single leaf\, like the leaf parachute mushroom\, whilst other may be large bracket fungi that are almost as old as the trees they call home\, like the artists bracket. \nHand lenses will be provided so the exquisite detail of the mushrooms found can be seen with plenty of opportunities for photographs. There will be time for questions and discussions around mycology and identification. \nThe walk will be led by Mycologist Tom Haddon who recently completed Stanwick Lakes’ first fungal survey which identified the presence of important waxcap species and a species vulnerable to extinction in Europe with the discovery of the Wrinkled Peach (Rhodutus palmatus). \nCheck out this BBC news article on Tom’s rare discovery at Stanwick Lakes – Rare wrinkled peach mushroom \nPlease wear appropriate footwear and appropriate clothing for the weather.
