SUMMARY:Heritage Talk: Understanding Roman Northamptonshire
DESCRIPTION:Understanding Roman Northamptonshire \nA heritage talk by Dr Michael J Curtis \nNorthamptonshire occupies a central position within the landscape of Roman Britain\, yet its remarkable archaeological heritage is often overshadowed by more familiar Roman sites elsewhere in the country. This talk explores how the county was transformed following the Roman conquest\, revealing a landscape of thriving settlements\, prosperous villas\, extensive agricultural estates\, industrial production\, and an impressive network of roads linking communities across the province. \nDrawing upon archaeological discoveries from across Northamptonshire\, the presentation examines the development of towns and villages\, the lives of those who farmed the land\, practised crafts\, traded goods\, and worshipped their gods. It also considers the county’s role within wider economic and communication networks that connected Britain with the rest of the Roman Empire. \nFrom spectacular villa mosaics and rural temples to everyday objects recovered from excavations\, this talk highlights the rich archaeological evidence that allows us to reconstruct nearly four centuries of Roman occupation. Whether you are new to Roman archaeology or already have an interest in the period\, this presentation offers an engaging journey through one of Britain’s most important yet often overlooked Roman landscapes. \nSpeaker Bio: \nDr Michael J Curtis \nDr Michael J Curtis is an Honorary Fellow in the School of Heritage and Culture at the University of Leicester and co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of My Ancient World Learning Ltd\, a company specialising in the delivery of lifelong learning courses in archaeology\, ancient history\, and classical studies. He is a landscape and coastal archaeologist whose research focuses on the maritime landscapes of the Mediterranean during the Hellenistic and Roman periods\, the Roman maritime landscape of Britain\, and the Iron Age and Roman landscapes of his home county of Northamptonshire. He is co-editor of the Cretan Studies series\, New Approaches and Perspectives in the Study of Hellenistic\, Roman and Early Byzantine Crete\, published by Oxbow Books. He has published widely on Hellenistic and Roman Crete and regularly lectures on this and the archaeeology of Roman Britain.

SUMMARY:Willow Lantern Workshops - October Half Term
DESCRIPTION:Make Your Own Willow Lantern for Halloween (or our Christmas Lantern Walk!)\n\nThis family activity takes place in our ‘Discovery Zone’ which features a hand-decorated lantern. This is apt\, because the lanterns you’ll be making are crafted from cut willow that our Rangers have collected during their conservation work\, right here on the reserve. \nWith friendly guidance\, you’ll build a lantern frame\, add twinkling lights\, and cover it with a ghostly white tissue paper canvas. Then it’s time for the best bit… decorating! Use bright colours\, creepy shapes\, and spooky designs to make your lantern come alive. \nNo experience is necessary\, however lanterns can be a bit tricky for little hands to make\, so young children need to be supervised by an adult to attend. No more than 2 children per adult for children under 10 years of age. \nTickets are £9 per lantern. \nBooking required\, and spaces limited\, so don’t delay! \nFull payment is required at the time of booking to secure your reservation. Please be aware that we do not offer refunds on half term events\, so ensure your plans align accordingly before securing your spot. We do accept transfer of tickets via email to an alternative time/date for the same activity – subject to availability. Thank you for your understanding\, and we look forward to your participation! \nParking not included.

SUMMARY:Guided Mushroom Walks led by Mycologist Tom Haddon
DESCRIPTION:Fungi are the cornerstones of ecosystems across the world and mushrooms are the enigmatic and ephemeral fruits of these vitally important organisms. Whether they are exchanging nutrients with plants or breaking down dead material for the next generation\, they are an essential partner to an estimated 90% of all plant species and are found on every continent on Earth. \nStanwick Lakes is home to many species of fungi\, with many only found in specific grassland and woodland habitats. During this 2-hour walk\, time will be spent learning which habitats may be home to which fungi and then these habitats will be explored to find and identify mushrooms. Some may be tiny\, with dozens of mushrooms inhabiting a single leaf\, like the leaf parachute mushroom\, whilst other may be large bracket fungi that are almost as old as the trees they call home\, like the artists bracket. \nHand lenses will be provided so the exquisite detail of the mushrooms found can be seen with plenty of opportunities for photographs. There will be time for questions and discussions around mycology and identification. \nThe walk will be led by Mycologist Tom Haddon who recently completed Stanwick Lakes’ first fungal survey which identified the presence of important waxcap species and a species vulnerable to extinction in Europe with the discovery of the Wrinkled Peach (Rhodutus palmatus). \nCheck out this BBC news article on Tom’s rare discovery at Stanwick Lakes – Rare wrinkled peach mushroom \nPlease wear appropriate footwear and appropriate clothing for the weather.
