DESCRIPTION:For 2026\, we are pleased to offer weekly open water swimming sessions\, taking place every Friday evening throughout the summer season\, from Friday 15th May to Friday 28th August. This is our most regular programme to date\, giving swimmers the opportunity to build a consistent routine and enjoy the benefits of swimming in a unique natural setting. \nAll sessions are fully lifeguarded and supported by an experienced on-water safety team\, ensuring a safe and structured environment for open water swimming. \nAs a nature reserve and designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)\, Stanwick Lakes is subject to strict protections. SUMMARY:Tinsmithing workshops
DESCRIPTION:Course Overview\nThis critically endangered heritage craft is being kept alive at Stanwick Lakes — and you can be a part of it! Learn the skills of tin-smithing from one of the last tinsmiths in the country. \nTinplate – a thin sheet of iron or steel coated with pure tin – is strong\, lightweight\, durable\, food safe and resembles silver. During the 18th and 19th centuries it was ubiquitous in home\, work and military life\, with every town having its own “Tinman & Brazier.” Tin-smithing is now classified by the Heritage Crafts Association as critically endangered and at serious risk of no longer being practised in the UK. \nDuring the day you’ll learn the core processes – measuring\, cutting with tin-snips\, burring\, forming\, wiring\, seaming and soldering — and make a wall hanging candle sconce plus your choice of a pastry cutter\, a candle holder\, or cup to take home. No experience is needed; the course is suitable for adults of any ability\, limited to six participants. Teenagers 16+ are welcome with adult supervision. \nThe course takes place in a purpose-built oak framed craft barn at Stanwick Lakes\, a protected Nature Reserve and Wetland of International Importance covering 750 acres. \nParking is included in the ticket price. Tickets are £120 per person per one day workshop. Three workshops are available to book – Sunday 26th July\, Saturday 29th August or Sunday 30th August. \nBook now \nAbout the Tutor\nYour tutor is John Wills\, one of the last three professional tinsmiths in Britain. In 2022\, as part of a Heritage Crafts Association project to rescue tinsmithing\, he trained under master tinsmith Karl Schmidt (Dakota Tinworks\, USA) and subsequently built a new tinman & brazier workshop to keep the craft alive. DESCRIPTION:Course Overview\nIn this introductory workshop you will learn the traditional craft of corn dolly making\, a heritage skill rooted in the rhythms of the harvest and practiced across Britain and Europe for hundreds\, even thousands of years. \nYou will explore how these beautiful woven forms were traditionally created from the final sheaf of the harvest\, believed to hold the spirit of the crop through the winter and ensure fertility and a successful harvest the following year. \nYour workshop will begin with an introduction to the history\, cultural significance and regional variations of corn dollies\, before moving on to practical instruction. \nGuided by course leader Beckie Pallitt of Windhover Crafts\, you will learn the foundational techniques needed to create your own corn dolly inspired by traditional forms. \nThroughout the workshop\, you will be supported step-by-step\, developing skills in handling and preparing the straw\, shaping\, and binding. \nThis workshop offers a unique opportunity to connect with an endangered rural craft and gain insight into traditions that have been passed down through generations. By the end of the course\, you will take home your own handcrafted corn dollys along with the knowledge to continue practicing this rewarding skill. \nThe course itself takes place in and around the purpose built oak framed craft barn at Stanwick Lakes which is managed by Rockingham Forest Trust as an environmental charity. Stanwick Lakes is a protected Nature Reserve and a Wetland of International Importance\, covering 750 acres of open space with seven miles of paths\, a perfect inspiration to crafters and makers. \nAbout the tutor\nBeckie has been practising many crafts since an early age\, but recently took up teaching them as a way to pass on her knowledge and enthusiasm. \nShe has an interest in both traditional and contemporary crafts and believes strongly that everyone has a creative streak\, it just needs some encouragement to shine and so offers a relaxing session where you can learn new skills and come away with something beautiful made by you. \nThe course is suitable for beginners\, with no prior experience required. Everyone is welcome but is best suited to learners aged 5–11 or those accessing the Key Stages 1 & 2 curriculum. \nNature: Wildflower Meadows\nAs part of a new project\, help us to improve our wildflower meadows by becoming part of our Ranger team. \nBlacksmithing Demonstration: Iron Age Britain\nLearn about the amazing changes in Iron Age Britain and watch an exciting blacksmithing demonstration to see how metal was shaped. \nCampfire Cooking\nDiscover the fun of cooking outdoors by making flatbreads and toasting marshmallows to create delicious s’mores. Vegan options are available\, but please let us know about any dietary requirements when booking. \nPlease note that this activity involves ingredients containing gluten and dairy. Food will be prepared outdoors\, and while every effort will be made to minimise cross-contamination\, we cannot guarantee that products will be free from traces of gluten or dairy. DESCRIPTION:Bronze Age Burials And Ceremonial Landscape \nA heritage talk by Professor Stephen Upex \nThe coming of the Bronze Age heralds major changes in the way that society appears to have operated\, farmed\, buried their dead and worshipped which can all be detected within the archaeological landscape. This talk will review some of these changes and explain how society developed  and who was driving these changes. \nSpeaker Bio: \nProfessor Stephen Upex Ph.D.\, MCIfA. FSA. \nProf. Stephen Upex has written papers and books on topics related to British landscape history and archaeology and his interests range from Roman and Saxon landscapes and archaeology to medieval open fields systems. He has directed archaeological excavations on Roman and Saxon sites in the East Midlands and contributed to several Time Team programmes for Channel Four. Recently Stephen has written a series of landscape and archaeological reports and books on sites within the East Midlands and he is currently in the process of publishing a volume on Roman industrial landscapes.  His most recent books are the ‘Romans in the Nene valley’ (2022) and ‘Edmund Tyrell Artis and the Durobrivae of Antoninus’ (2023) Stephen is a tutor at the University of Cambridge and also works a freelance archaeologist\, author and consultant. He is a member of the Chartered Institute for Field Archaeologists (MCIfA) and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries (FSA).

SUMMARY:A 2-Day Flax Fiber and Weaving Workshop on Your Handmade Ceramic Frame
DESCRIPTION:Course Overview\nIn this two‑day workshop\, participants will create their own ceramic weaving frame and complete a small handwoven piece using natural fibres guided by artist Emi Fujisawa. \nSaturday 5th September 2026 (Day 1):\nStudents will make their ceramic weaving frames using stoneware clay and decorate them with the course tutor Emi’s forged natural clay slips. Day 1 is from 10am until 1pm. After the session\, Emi will fire and glaze each frame with her own glazes. \nSaturday 12th September 2026 (Day 2):\nStudents will receive their fired ceramic frames\, prepared by Emi. They will learn how to set up the loom and create their own handwoven piece using natural and sustainable yarns\, including Emi’s home-grown flax fibres\, forged natural fibres and yarns\, Japanese kibiso yarn\, silk mawata fleece\, alpaca wool\, and more. Day 2 is from 10am until 4pm. \nEmi has worked on several projects growing flax plants to produce fabric in different communities. She will also demonstrate the process of turning flax plants into fibre and hand-spinning it into linen yarn. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about flax fibre. \nParticipants are welcome to bring their own yarns as well and will be able to take their completed weaving on the frame home. \nStudents will need to be available to attend both days of this course on the Saturday 5th and Saturday 12th September. \nParking is included in the ticket price. \nCancellation Policy  \nCancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 4 weeks before the course starts. SUMMARY:Bat Walk (Nene Valley Mammal Youth Group)
DESCRIPTION:Come and join a Bat Walk for with the Nene Valley Bat Group on a walk as we look for bats around Stanwick Lakes\, and listen out for their echolocation sounds using bat detectors.\nThis bat walk is a Nene Valley Mammal Youth Group event and is designed for young people aged 11-17. Young people attending this event must be accompanied by their adult at all times. \nAccompanying adults do not need to book a separate ticket but will need to be named on the young person’s ticket – you can advise at booking stage. \nThe NVMYG has been formed to inspire young people (under age 30) to learn about mammals and take action to protect them. Young people will be able spend time outdoors\, meet like-minded people\, and develop their skills to become citizen scientists and active conservationists. The group has been set up in response to\, and with\, local young people who have a passion for nature and is part of the local network of the Mammal Society\, Britain’s leading charity devoted to the science-led conservation of mammals. \nAs this is a free event run by the Nene Valley Bat Group and Stanwick Lakes (Rockingham Forest Trust) we welcome a donation of £5 (cash) on the evening on the event.

SUMMARY:Copper Bowl Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Course Overview\nDiscover the satisfying process of shaping metal by hand in this immersive copper bowl making workshop with heritage metalworker John Wills. Using upcycled sheet copper\, you’ll learn how flat metal can be transformed into a strong hollow form through a combination of rhythm and careful hammer work. \nYou’ll be guided through the essential techniques of copper forming\, including how to anneal the metal to soften it and make it responsive\, before working it over stakes and anvils using hammers and forming tools. The emphasis is on understanding the material\, and how to work with it rather than against it. Sustainability is at the heart of this course. By using reclaimed copper\, you’ll not only learn traditional metalworking skills but also explore how discarded materials can be given new life as beautiful\, functional objects. By the end of the workshop\, you’ll have created a unique hand-formed copper bowl\, shaped entirely by you. \nThis workshop is suitable for complete beginners\, with no previous metalworking experience required. It’s ideal if you’re curious about heritage crafts\, interested in sustainable making\, or looking to expand your skills beyond blacksmithing or tinsmithing into copper and other non-ferrous metals.\nThe course is limited to five participants\, ensuring plenty of individual guidance and access to tools. \nThis course takes place in and around the purpose-built oak-framed craft barn at Stanwick Lakes. \nWhat should I wear / bring?\n• Old clothing made from natural fibres only (no polyester or synthetics)\n• Sturdy\, closed-toe footwear is essential\n• A notebook is optional but useful\n• If you use reading glasses\, please bring them \nWhat’s included;\nAll tools\, upcycled copper\, materials and safety equipment are provided and must be worn throughout the course.\nTea\, coffee and biscuits are provided free of charge. There are two workshops available to book – Saturday 12th or Sunday 13th September. \nAbout Your Tutor\nJohn Wills is a heritage metalworker with over ten years’ experience running his own specialist craft business and has been teaching since 2017. He specialises in historical metalwork using copper\, brass\, tinplate and iron\, producing accurate reproductions for museums\, re-enactment groups\, television and film. In 2022\, John was selected to take part in a Heritage Crafts Association project aimed at safeguarding tinsmithing in the UK. As part of this\, he trained under master tinsmith Karl Schmidt of Dakota Tinworks (USA) at the Museum of Making. All sing requests are considered; let Craig play a song from your wedding or childhood\, or play ‘guess that tune’ on your table. You can also choose from a song-menu booklet that includes anything from Adele and Abba\, through to Eric Clapton\, Elton John\, to Ed Sheeran and Frank Sinatra!
