SUMMARY:The HERDS - Animal Travels
DESCRIPTION:The HERDS is a groundbreaking public art and climate initiative designed to inspire action and renew our bond with the natural world. From April to August 2025\, life-size puppet animals will sweep through city centres on a 20\,000km journey from the Congo Basin to the Arctic Circle\, bringing together the worlds of arts and science in an urgent call for climate action. \nWe are excited to let you know that Stanwick Lakes has been given a grant from the Art Fund to host hands-on educational\, community activities to raise awareness of this amazing project. \nThroughout May and June we will create a giant kestrel puppet with a professional puppeteer and local teenagers\, which will be part of an “Animal Travels” exhibition in the Visitor Centre Heritage Museum. The exhibition will take place in the May half term holiday and will feature some of the stories of the animals who lived in this part of the Nene Valley in the past\, and include local finds such as a woolly mammoth tooth and an auroch horn!  Alongside the exhibition\, there will be FREE drop in animal puppet crafts and a “Follow the HERDS” trail to help visitors learn about some of these amazing journeys while being immersed in beautiful views and wildlife outside on the nature reserve.

SUMMARY:Nest Box Monitoring Walk
DESCRIPTION:Help us to check the nest boxes on the nature reserve at Stanwick Lakes and meet some baby birds! \nEvery spring\, Stanwick Lakes conducts nest box monitoring as part of our contribution to the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) national bird population survey. \nLed by experienced nest recorders\, trained by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO)\, you are invited to witness these conservation efforts\, first hand. Our dedicated (licenced) volunteers monitor nests\, count eggs\, and tag young birds with metal rings for tracking\, providing valuable insights into the species that live in different habitats\, the success rates of breeding\, and the impact of climate change on bird populations. \nThis scheme has been running since 2007\, and over 3000 eggs have been monitored in that time!\nAt time of writing\, there are 307 eggs so far this year! These are from a variety of birds such as Blue Tits\, Great Tits\, Stock Doves and Tawny Owls. \nThis walk will offer the opportunity to learn about birds on the reserve from knowledgeable ornithologists\, and potentially to see some of these birds up close\, particularly the beautiful baby tits\, if they’re yet to fledge. \nSo don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to meet the birds at Stanwick Lakes! Join us for the Nest Box Monitoring Walk on 17th May from 10am am to approximately noon.

DESCRIPTION:The talk \n‘The Peacemaker’ as told by Lynette Hill \nAn overview \nThe Peacemaker – A prophet on a divine mission to create an alliance between warring nations faces his greatest challenge in the monstrous swamp-dwelling\, snake-haired magician known as the Tadedaho. How does a man of peace deal with such a creature? The story of the Peacemaker\, a tale for all the ages\, is the founding myth of the Iroquois confederation of six nations in North America. \nThe speaker \nLynette Hill is an American writer and storyteller fascinated by the blended history of the Americas and the United Kingdom. Currently based in Milton Keynes\, she founded and hosts Bletchley’s monthly storytelling show for grownups\, Tales Tattled & Told. She has been telling tales at festivals\, schools\, care homes and multi-faith events around Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire since 2015. She had the honour of serving as 2023 Bard of Stony Stratford and is the author of the fantasy novel series The Glass Singers\, now available on Amazon and elsewhere. You can also catch her at 10 pm on Tuesdays telling Tales from the Shadows on Leighton Buzz Radio.
