SUMMARY:Spoon Carving Workshop - One Day
DESCRIPTION:On this therapeutic one-day beginners’ course at Stanwick Lakes you will learn how to carve a spoon using basic wood carving techniques and tools. \nYou will begin by learning how to cleave wood and use an axe to produce your spoon blank. The rest of the day will be spent using a sloyd knife and a hook knife to carve to shape your individual home-made spoon. The course covers a selection of knife grips\, which will keep your carving under control as well as keeping you safe. Time will be spent looking at how the spoon develops in a 3-dimensional form\, covering the spoons ‘crook’\, bowl and handle to get a well-balanced and functioning spoon. \nWooden spoons like you will make have been carved for thousands of years and for most of the population\, were used as an eating utensil until relatively recently. ‘Spoon’ was originally an Anglo-Saxon word that meant ‘a chip of wood’. The oldest known wooden spoon in England is a ladle found at Glastonbury Lake Village dating to 250BC. Another notable find of wooden spoons are the personal spoons found on the wreck of the Mary Rose. These spoons may have been whittled by their owners. \nThe course takes place in and around the purpose built oak framed craft barn at Stanwick Lakes which is managed by Rockingham Forest Trust as an environmental charity. \nStanwick Lakes is a protected Nature Reserve and a Wetland of International Importance\, covering 750 acres of open space with seven miles of paths\, a perfect inspiration to crafters and makers. \nDuring your lunchtime you can enjoy the onsite cafés and visit the heritage museum or sit by a lake and watch the wildlife. \nTo find out more\, view dates and get tickets\, visit: Spoon Carving | Stanwick Lakes

SUMMARY:Nest Box Monitoring Walk
DESCRIPTION:Help us to check the nest boxes on the nature reserve at Stanwick Lakes and meet some baby birds! \nEvery spring\, Stanwick Lakes conducts nest box monitoring as part of our contribution to the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) national bird population survey. \nLed by experienced nest recorders\, trained and licensed by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO)\, you are invited to witness these conservation efforts\, first hand. Our dedicated (licenced) volunteers monitor nests\, count eggs\, and tag young birds with metal rings for tracking\, providing valuable insights into the species that live in different habitats\, the success rates of breeding\, and the impact of climate change on bird populations. \nThis scheme has been running since 2007\, and over 3000 eggs have been monitored in that time!\nAt time of writing\, there are over 100 eggs so far this year! These are from a variety of birds such as Blue Tits\, Great Tits\, Stock Doves and Tawny Owls. \nThis walk will offer the opportunity to learn about birds on the reserve from knowledgeable ornithologists\, and potentially to see some of these birds up close\, particularly the beautiful baby tits\, if they’re yet to fledge. \nSo don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to meet the birds at Stanwick Lakes! Join us for the Nest Box Monitoring Walk on 16th May from 10am am to approximately noon. \nPlease note: this can be a longer walk for little legs than some of our usual family activities and is best suited to children aged 6+ (or younger children in buggies are welcome).\nParent/carer discretion is advised.

SUMMARY:Blacksmithing Workshop - For Young People (ages 12-17)
DESCRIPTION:Get fired up and step into the world of blacksmithing!\nThis hands-on taster workshop is a thrilling introduction to the ancient art of forging\, specially designed for young people. You’ll discover the basics of working with hot metal – heating\, shaping\, twisting\, and scrolling – and experience the excitement of creating something from scratch in a real forge. \nWhat You’ll Learn\n– Master basic blacksmithing techniques like heating and shaping.\n– Learn safety and tool use from a professional blacksmith.\n– Customize projects to suit your skill level \nWho is this course for?\nThis day is suitable for everyone. Blacksmithing is about technique and making sure the steel is heated to the right temperature before working it\, not about using heavy hammers and hitting the metal very hard! \nYour tutor for the day is John Wills\, who has been running his own heritage metalwork business for ten years and teaching since 2017. He specialises in making historical reproductions in copper\, brass\, tinplate and iron/steel for museums\, re-enactors\, TV\, and film. As a member of the Heritage Craft Association\, John is actively involved in promoting and preserving metalwork skills and traditions that would otherwise be lost. His blacksmith work has been used in Hollywood films and can be seen at historic sites around England. \nThe course is limited to just 4 participants\, so that each person has their own anvil to work on.\nAll tools\, materials\, and safety gear are provided – just bring your curiosity and wear sturdy\, hard-soled footwear and full length trousers.\nFree parking is including with each booking. \nImportant: Participants under 18 must be supervised by a responsible adult (18+). Please avoid wearing transition lenses or auto-darkening glasses.

SUMMARY:Tinsmithing workshops
DESCRIPTION:This critically endangered heritage craft is being kept alive at Stanwick Lakes — and you can be a part of it! Learn the skills of tin-smithing from one of the last tinsmiths in the country. \nTinplate – a thin sheet of iron or steel coated with pure tin – is strong\, lightweight\, durable\, food safe and resembles silver. During the 18th and 19th centuries it was ubiquitous in home\, work and military life\, with every town having its own “Tinman & Brazier.” Tin-smithing is now classified by the Heritage Crafts Association as critically endangered and at serious risk of no longer being practised in the UK. \nDuring the day you’ll learn the core processes – measuring\, cutting with tin-snips\, burring\, forming\, wiring\, seaming and soldering — and make a wall hanging candle sconce plus your choice of a pastry cutter\, a candle holder\, or cup to take home. No experience is needed; the course is suitable for adults of any ability\, limited to six participants. Teenagers 16+ are welcome with adult supervision. \nThe course takes place in a purpose-built oak framed craft barn at Stanwick Lakes\, a protected Nature Reserve and Wetland of International Importance covering 750 acres. \nYour tutor is John Wills\, one of the last three professional tinsmiths in Britain. In 2022\, as part of a Heritage Crafts Association project to rescue tinsmithing\, he trained under master tinsmith Karl Schmidt (Dakota Tinworks\, USA) and subsequently built a new tinman & brazier workshop to keep the craft alive. He is a Yeoman of the Worshipful Company of Tinplate Workers Alias Wire Workers of the City of London. \nOur next course on June 13th is sold out\, but there are still a couple left on June 14th. \nFor more information or to book – click here.
