DESCRIPTION:Course Overview\nIn this hands-on\, beginner-friendly class\, Lisa will guide you through the beautiful and organic process of batik\, a centuries-old technique that uses melted wax and vibrant inks on silk to create rich\, flowing designs. Over four hours\, you’ll experiment with mark-making\, layering\, and colour blending\, before crafting your own unique silk artwork inspired by the natural forms of spring. \nBy the end of the session\, you’ll leave not only with a framed piece of art to treasure (or gift!) but also with the confidence to continue exploring this versatile medium at home. \nAll materials are included\, along with plenty of encouragement\, expert tips\, and creative inspiration. SUMMARY:Wooden Spoon Carving Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Course Overview\nOn this therapeutic one-day beginners’ course at Stanwick Lakes you will learn how to carve a spoon using basic wood carving techniques and tools. \nYou will begin by learning how to cleave wood and use an axe to produce your spoon blank. The rest of the day will be spent using a sloyd knife and a hook knife to carve to shape your individual home-made spoon. The course covers a selection of knife grips\, which will keep your carving under control as well as keeping you safe. Time will be spent looking at how the spoon develops in a 3-dimensional form\, covering the spoons ‘crook’\, bowl and handle to get a well-balanced and functioning spoon. \nWooden spoons like you will make have been carved for thousands of years and for most of the population\, were used as an eating utensil until relatively recently. ‘Spoon’ was originally an Anglo-Saxon word that meant ‘a chip of wood’. The oldest known wooden spoon in England is a ladle found at Glastonbury Lake Village dating to 250BC. Another notable find of wooden spoons are the personal spoons found on the wreck of the Mary Rose. These spoons may have been whittled by their owners. \nThe course takes place in and around the purpose built oak framed craft barn at Stanwick Lakes which is managed by Rockingham Forest Trust as an environmental charity. \nParking is included in the ticket price. DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Northamptonshire Badger Group and suitable for young adults age 18-30. \nJoin the Northamptonshire Badger group to discover all about badgers\, including how to spot the signs that they live on a site\, their setts and how to survey for them. The event will start in the visitor centre with a talk on badger ecology\, followed by walk looking for signs of tracks\, trails and setts. This walk is a Nene Valley Mammal Youth Group event which has been set up to inspire young people to learn about mammals and take action to protect them. This badger walk is for young adults aged between 18-30 only. \nThis badger walk is a Nene Valley Mammal Youth Group event. The group has been formed to inspire young people (Aged 0-30) to learn about mammals and take action to protect them. Young people will be able spend time outdoors\, meet like-minded people\, and develop their skills to become citizen scientists and active conservationists. DESCRIPTION:The Roman invasion of AD 43 and the conquest of Britain \nA heritage talk by Professor Stephen Upex \nThe Romans sent an invasion force to Britain in AD 43 and for the next 4 centuries controlled the landscape of Britannia. This talk will explain how this invasion unfolded. Who where the troops\, what were their forts like\, how did the military operate\, was Britain ever fully conquered and why did the Romans come to Britan in the first place? \nSpeaker Bio: \nProfessor Stephen Upex Ph.D.\, MCIfA. FSA. \nProf. Stephen Upex has written papers and books on topics related to British landscape history and archaeology and his interests range from Roman and Saxon landscapes and archaeology to medieval open fields systems. He has directed archaeological excavations on Roman and Saxon sites in the East Midlands and contributed to several Time Team programmes for Channel Four. Recently Stephen has written a series of landscape and archaeological reports and books on sites within the East Midlands and he is currently in the process of publishing a volume on Roman industrial landscapes.  His most recent books are the ‘Romans in the Nene valley’ (2022) and ‘Edmund Tyrell Artis and the Durobrivae of Antoninus’ (2023) Stephen is a tutor at the University of Cambridge and also works a freelance archaeologist\, author and consultant. He is a member of the Chartered Institute for Field Archaeologists (MCIfA) and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries (FSA).

This talk explores how the county was transformed following the Roman conquest\, revealing a landscape of thriving settlements\, prosperous villas\, extensive agricultural estates\, industrial production\, and an impressive network of roads linking communities across the province. \nDrawing upon archaeological discoveries from across Northamptonshire\, the presentation examines the development of towns and villages\, the lives of those who farmed the land\, practised crafts\, traded goods\, and worshipped their gods. It also considers the county’s role within wider economic and communication networks that connected Britain with the rest of the Roman Empire. \nFrom spectacular villa mosaics and rural temples to everyday objects recovered from excavations\, this talk highlights the rich archaeological evidence that allows us to reconstruct nearly four centuries of Roman occupation. Whether you are new to Roman archaeology or already have an interest in the period\, this presentation offers an engaging journey through one of Britain’s most important yet often overlooked Roman landscapes. \nSpeaker Bio: \nDr Michael J Curtis \nDr Michael J Curtis is an Honorary Fellow in the School of Heritage and Culture at the University of Leicester and co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of My Ancient World Learning Ltd\, a company specialising in the delivery of lifelong learning courses in archaeology\, ancient history\, and classical studies. He is a landscape and coastal archaeologist whose research focuses on the maritime landscapes of the Mediterranean during the Hellenistic and Roman periods\, the Roman maritime landscape of Britain\, and the Iron Age and Roman landscapes of his home county of Northamptonshire. SUMMARY:Christmas Woodcarving Workshop - One Day
DESCRIPTION:Course Overview\nYou will learn the traditional craft of wood carving by hand which dates back thousands of years\, from when we first learned to make sharp tools. This one-day course is suitable for those starting out and also for carvers who would like to develop their skills further. \nFor beginners\, the day starts with the introduction of the tools and the techniques and materials used for hand carving wood. This will be followed by a small carving project to become familiar with the basic skills and then\, after lunch\, you will move on to a new project that involves creating a larger relief carving. \nThe day is run in a very flexible format and allows for more experienced carvers to develop their skills under the expert guidance of Pete\, your tutor. Green woodworking is an ancient craft long predating the coming of sawmills and kiln drying. This craft utilises the properties of unseasoned timber to create anything from a humble spoon to a grand timber framed house. Carved decoration is as old as the craft and examples can be seen in every church and historic building in England. \nThe course takes place in the purpose built oak framed craft barn at Stanwick Lakes which is managed by Rockingham Forest Trust as an environmental charity. \nParking is included in the ticket price. DESCRIPTION:Course Overview\nMake winter evenings brighter by making your own traditional pierced candle lantern from tinplate. \nOn this two-day course at the beautiful Stanwick Lakes\, you will learn how to pierce patterns into tinplate\, form it into shape and use various joining methods to create your own traditional tinplate lantern. These traditional lanterns give a bright light when the door is open\, and cast decorative patterns onto the wall through the piercings. \nThe course will start with an introduction to the tools and methods used in traditional tin-smithing. On the first morning you will learn by practising cutting with tin snips\, using dividers\, and marking gauges. To introduce forming shapes in the tinplate you will make wall hanging candle sconce. During the first afternoon we will learn piercing and discuss designs. You will then make the pierced barrel and cone top for your lantern. At the end of day one you will understand the methods and tools used in traditional tin-smithing. \nDay two starts with finishing off any piercing and then cutting out all the other tinplate parts required to construction your own pierced lantern. You will form the shape of the lantern using traditional stake tools\, mallets and your hands. As you progress through the stages of constructing your lantern you will learn how to solder tinplate using traditional fluxes. \nAt all times during these processes your tutor will be available to help or advise. At the end of day two you will have your own tinplate pierced lantern with your own design of piercing and a hanging wall sconce. \nThe course takes place in a purpose-built oak framed craft barn at Stanwick Lakes\, a protected Nature Reserve and Wetland of International Importance covering 750 acres. \nYour tutor is John Wills\, one of the last three professional tinsmiths in Britain. In 2022\, as part of a Heritage Crafts Association project to rescue tinsmithing\, he trained under master tinsmith Karl Schmidt (Dakota Tinworks\, USA) and subsequently built a new tinman & brazier workshop to keep the craft alive. He is a Yeoman of the Worshipful Company of Tinplate Workers Alias Wire Workers of the City of London. \nParking is included in the ticket price. DESCRIPTION:Course Overview\nWarm up this winter with tea\, biscuits\, and creativity in the heart of Stanwick Lakes! \nJoin us for a hands-on\, full day workshop where you’ll craft your very own genuine stained glass decorations\, perfect for hanging on your tree or sparkling in your window this Christmas. Using the Tiffany copper foil technique\, you’ll learn how to cut glass\, apply copper foil\, solder your design\, and finish it beautifully. By the end\, you’ll have a set of handmade treasures to take home\, and plenty of festive cheer. \nPlease note that solder contains lead. Therefore\, this course is not recommended for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Please wear covered shoes. No previous experience is necessary. \nWhat’s included in the price: Tools\, materials and safety equipment are provided. Participants are simply asked to bring a packed lunch and their own supply of enthusiasm!
