Crafts involved in recreating the Huldremose Shawl
An Overview
Huldremose Woman is a bog body discovered in Denmark in the 1870’s, so well preserved that for centuries archaeologists and researchers have been able to study and discover extraordinary information on the clothing items- identifying the dyes used, the pattern of the weave and even the thickness of each thread. This astonishing discovery, and the detailed research undertaken, has enabled skilled artisans from the Northants Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers to study and replicate the garments, giving a glimpse into Iron Age clothing and crafting as part of an exciting National Lottery Funded Heritage Project at Stanwick Lakes.
The demonstration will show some of the crafts involved in the re-creation of iron age textiles and allow visitors to try spinning on a drop spindle.
The Speaker
Members of the Northants Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers have met in their Weaving Barn at Stanwick Lakes since 2022. They have been researching and experimenting with ancient textiles, learning how to prep, spin and dye wool and other materials to create beautiful replica textiles, and sharing their work with visitors.
