SUMMARY:Introduction to Corn Dolly Crafting
DESCRIPTION:Course Overview\nIn this introductory workshop you will learn the traditional craft of corn dolly making\, a heritage skill rooted in the rhythms of the harvest and practiced across Britain and Europe for hundreds\, even thousands of years. \nYou will explore how these beautiful woven forms were traditionally created from the final sheaf of the harvest\, believed to hold the spirit of the crop through the winter and ensure fertility and a successful harvest the following year. \nYour workshop will begin with an introduction to the history\, cultural significance and regional variations of corn dollies\, before moving on to practical instruction. \nGuided by course leader Beckie Pallitt of Windhover Crafts\, you will learn the foundational techniques needed to create your own corn dolly inspired by traditional forms. \nThroughout the workshop\, you will be supported step-by-step\, developing skills in handling and preparing the straw\, shaping\, and binding. \nThis workshop offers a unique opportunity to connect with an endangered rural craft and gain insight into traditions that have been passed down through generations. By the end of the course\, you will take home your own handcrafted corn dollys along with the knowledge to continue practicing this rewarding skill. \nThe course itself takes place in and around the purpose built oak framed craft barn at Stanwick Lakes which is managed by Rockingham Forest Trust as an environmental charity. Stanwick Lakes is a protected Nature Reserve and a Wetland of International Importance\, covering 750 acres of open space with seven miles of paths\, a perfect inspiration to crafters and makers. \nAbout the tutor\nBeckie has been practising many crafts since an early age\, but recently took up teaching them as a way to pass on her knowledge and enthusiasm. \nShe has an interest in both traditional and contemporary crafts and believes strongly that everyone has a creative streak\, it just needs some encouragement to shine and so offers a relaxing session where you can learn new skills and come away with something beautiful made by you. \nThe course is suitable for beginners\, with no prior experience required. DESCRIPTION:Summer Art Club: Flower Meadows\nA new Summer Art Club session for children aged 7–12 years inspired by the colours\, shapes and textures of flower meadows. \nIn this session\, children will design and build their own richly textured meadow scene\, exploring layering\, pattern\, collage and colour. Using simple circular forms as a starting point\, they’ll develop a lively composition full of detail and movement\, while gaining confidence working with different materials and techniques. The focus is on experimentation\, creative decision-making and enjoying the process of making artwork from start to finish. \nThe session is led by professional artist Emma\, who brings extensive experience in both fine art and education. After completing a Fine Art and Art History degree at Newcastle University\, Emma has worked in heritage and learning environments alongside her own creative practice in painting\, drawing and printmaking. Her work has been published in art books and guides\, and exhibited at venues including Covent Garden in London and the Hatton Gallery in Newcastle. She now focuses on delivering engaging art workshops for adults and children\, encouraging creativity and confidence in a supportive setting. \nAll materials are provided. DESCRIPTION:Try something different at this year’s Family Fun Day and learn the skills needed to throw axes in a safe and fun way!\nWhether throwing an axe has never crossed your mind\, or you’re already an axe-throwing champion\, these sessions are suitable for all. \nCan you imagine how satisfying each THUD will be when you hit your target? \nOur axe throwing sessions put a unique twist on your visit to Stanwick Lakes\, as you receive tips and coaching from a qualified instructor in an outdoor setting – perfect for letting off some steam and creating great memories. \nEach pre-booked axe throwing session is £10 per person\, and gets you a dedicated session and the opportunity to learn how to throw different styles of axe! \nFor age 11 years old and upwards (adult supervision required for under 16s). SUMMARY:Tinsmithing workshops
DESCRIPTION:This critically endangered heritage craft is being kept alive at Stanwick Lakes — and you can be a part of it! Learn the skills of tin-smithing from one of the last tinsmiths in the country. \nTinplate – a thin sheet of iron or steel coated with pure tin – is strong\, lightweight\, durable\, food safe and resembles silver. During the 18th and 19th centuries it was ubiquitous in home\, work and military life\, with every town having its own “Tinman & Brazier.” Tin-smithing is now classified by the Heritage Crafts Association as critically endangered and at serious risk of no longer being practised in the UK. \nDuring the day you’ll learn the core processes – measuring\, cutting with tin-snips\, burring\, forming\, wiring\, seaming and soldering — and make a wall hanging candle sconce plus your choice of a pastry cutter\, a candle holder\, or cup to take home. No experience is needed; the course is suitable for adults of any ability\, limited to six participants. Teenagers 16+ are welcome with adult supervision. \nThe course takes place in a purpose-built oak framed craft barn at Stanwick Lakes\, a protected Nature Reserve and Wetland of International Importance covering 750 acres. \nYour tutor is John Wills\, one of the last three professional tinsmiths in Britain. In 2022\, as part of a Heritage Crafts Association project to rescue tinsmithing\, he trained under master tinsmith Karl Schmidt (Dakota Tinworks\, USA) and subsequently built a new tinman & brazier workshop to keep the craft alive. DESCRIPTION:Join our rangers for a pond dipping session this May half term!\nUsing nets\, trays and magnifying glasses and guided by one of our rangers\, come and discover the creatures that live in the ponds at Stanwick Lakes! After a safety briefing and an introduction to the creatures we’re likely to find\, we’ll head to the pond dipping platform where you will be given a pond dipping kit! The Ranger will be on hand with identification keys to help you work out which creatures you have caught as well as to share knowledge about the pond ecosystem and the many species that call it home. \nThis activity is suitable for children aged 4+. \nSessions last approx. 30 minutes and a responsible adult must be present throughout.\nMeet at the Ranger Cabin 5 mins before and your chosen\, ticketed start time.\nPlease check our website on the day of your session for information regarding flooding – wellies may be advisable! \nPlease take a moment to check the date and time and make sure they work for your plans before booking\, as tickets are non-refundable.
