DESCRIPTION:Come and join a Bat Walk with the Nene Valley Bat Group as we look for bats around Stanwick Lakes\, and listen out for their echolocation sounds using bat detectors.\nThis bat walk is a Nene Valley Mammal Youth Group event and is designed for young people aged 11-17. Young people attending this event must be accompanied by their adult at all times. \nAccompanying adults do not need to book a separate ticket but will need to be named on the young person’s ticket – you can advise at booking stage. \nThe NVMYG has been formed to inspire young people (under age 30) to learn about mammals and take action to protect them. Young people will be able spend time outdoors\, meet like-minded people\, and develop their skills to become citizen scientists and active conservationists. The group has been set up in response to\, and with\, local young people who have a passion for nature and is part of the local network of the Mammal Society\, Britain’s leading charity devoted to the science-led conservation of mammals. \nAs this is a free event run by the Nene Valley Bat Group and Stanwick Lakes (Rockingham Forest Trust) we welcome a donation of £5 (cash) on the evening on the event.

DESCRIPTION:Bronze Age Burials And Ceremonial Landscape \nA heritage talk by Professor Stephen Upex \nThe coming of the Bronze Age heralds major changes in the way that society appears to have operated\, farmed\, buried their dead and worshipped which can all be detected within the archaeological landscape. This talk will review some of these changes and explain how society developed  and who was driving these changes. \nSpeaker Bio: \nProfessor Stephen Upex Ph.D.\, MCIfA. FSA. \nProf. Stephen Upex has written papers and books on topics related to British landscape history and archaeology and his interests range from Roman and Saxon landscapes and archaeology to medieval open fields systems. He has directed archaeological excavations on Roman and Saxon sites in the East Midlands and contributed to several Time Team programmes for Channel Four. Recently Stephen has written a series of landscape and archaeological reports and books on sites within the East Midlands and he is currently in the process of publishing a volume on Roman industrial landscapes.  His most recent books are the ‘Romans in the Nene valley’ (2022) and ‘Edmund Tyrell Artis and the Durobrivae of Antoninus’ (2023) Stephen is a tutor at the University of Cambridge and also works a freelance archaeologist\, author and consultant. He is a member of the Chartered Institute for Field Archaeologists (MCIfA) and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries (FSA).

On Wednesday 12th August\, prebook onto one of our 2 crafting sessions\, at which you’ll have the choice to create lots of brilliant badger themed crafts\, including: \n– A woodland diorama\, featuring your favourite woodland animals\, including badgers of course!\n– Use the power of the sun to create a woodland leaf work of art.\n– Make you very own woodland mammal identification guide\n– Fold an origami badger\, fox\, pine marten or squirrel. \nThis event is suitable for children aged 3+.\nParking is not included\, usual tariffs apply. SUMMARY:Introduction to Corn Dolly Crafting
DESCRIPTION:Course Overview\nIn this introductory workshop you will learn the traditional craft of corn dolly making\, a heritage skill rooted in the rhythms of the harvest and practiced across Britain and Europe for hundreds\, even thousands of years. \nYou will explore how these beautiful woven forms were traditionally created from the final sheaf of the harvest\, believed to hold the spirit of the crop through the winter and ensure fertility and a successful harvest the following year. \nYour workshop will begin with an introduction to the history\, cultural significance and regional variations of corn dollies\, before moving on to practical instruction. \nGuided by course leader Beckie Pallitt of Windhover Crafts\, you will learn the foundational techniques needed to create your own corn dolly inspired by traditional forms. \nThroughout the workshop\, you will be supported step-by-step\, developing skills in handling and preparing the straw\, shaping\, and binding. \nThis workshop offers a unique opportunity to connect with an endangered rural craft and gain insight into traditions that have been passed down through generations. By the end of the course\, you will take home your own handcrafted corn dollys along with the knowledge to continue practicing this rewarding skill. \nThe course itself takes place in and around the purpose built oak framed craft barn at Stanwick Lakes which is managed by Rockingham Forest Trust as an environmental charity. Stanwick Lakes is a protected Nature Reserve and a Wetland of International Importance\, covering 750 acres of open space with seven miles of paths\, a perfect inspiration to crafters and makers. \nAbout the tutor\nBeckie has been practising many crafts since an early age\, but recently took up teaching them as a way to pass on her knowledge and enthusiasm. \nShe has an interest in both traditional and contemporary crafts and believes strongly that everyone has a creative streak\, it just needs some encouragement to shine and so offers a relaxing session where you can learn new skills and come away with something beautiful made by you. \nThe course is suitable for beginners\, with no prior experience required. DESCRIPTION:Summer Art Club: Flower Meadows\nA new Summer Art Club session for children aged 7–12 years inspired by the colours\, shapes and textures of flower meadows. \nIn this session\, children will design and build their own richly textured meadow scene\, exploring layering\, pattern\, collage and colour. Using simple circular forms as a starting point\, they’ll develop a lively composition full of detail and movement\, while gaining confidence working with different materials and techniques. The focus is on experimentation\, creative decision-making and enjoying the process of making artwork from start to finish. \nThe session is led by professional artist Emma\, who brings extensive experience in both fine art and education. After completing a Fine Art and Art History degree at Newcastle University\, Emma has worked in heritage and learning environments alongside her own creative practice in painting\, drawing and printmaking. Her work has been published in art books and guides\, and exhibited at venues including Covent Garden in London and the Hatton Gallery in Newcastle. She now focuses on delivering engaging art workshops for adults and children\, encouraging creativity and confidence in a supportive setting. \nAll materials are provided. Whether you’re a long-time G&S fan or just fancy something a little different\, it’s a relaxed and enjoyable afternoon for music lovers\, families\, and groups of friends. \nYour afternoon tea includes finger sandwiches (cheddar cheese\, ham\, and egg mayo)\, freshly baked scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam\, a savoury selection\, and a mix of mini cakes and sweet treats. \nTwo sittings: 1:00pm–2:30pm or 3:00pm–4:30pm \nTickets from £24.95 (Adult)\, £31.95 (Sparkling)\, £15.95 (Children – must be booked alongside an adult ticket). Spaces are limited to 20 per sitting.\nDietary requirements can be catered for – please advise when booking. With extra lifeguards on land\, on-water safety support\, and a gently lit swim route\, you can be sure that your safety is our top priority as you relax under the stars! \nYour swim ticket includes: \n\nUnprecedented night-time access to our beautiful Solstice Lake\nA comprehensive safety briefing and support from our Swim Director\nA full hour swim\nFull safety support from our qualified lifeguards\, land-based safety team AND on-water safety team!\nA military grade glow stick to wear so that you are visible to the safety team in the water\nA hot drink to warm up after your swim!\nA campfire snack to enjoy!\nParking for the evening\n\nYou must bring a Tow float (we do have floats available to hire)\, swimwear and warm clothing for after the event. These hand-crafted items can be kept or gifted as symbols of love or friendship.\n\n\nLino Fabric Printing\n\nLearn the art of lino cutting with artist Lizzie Ault before printing your own tea towel or tote bag using her unique stamps.\n\n\nPaint & Sip: Watercolours\n\nUnwind and get creative at our Paint & Sip evening with resident artist Louise Berrill. Learn the art of watercolours as you paint your own lakeside landscape\, inspired by the beauty of our surroundings.\n\n\n\nThis event is suitable for aged 16+. \nParking is included in the price of the ticket. \nCancellation Policy \nCancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 4 weeks before the course starts. Cancellations made within 4 weeks of the session are non-refundable.
