SUMMARY:Bat Walk (Nene Valley Mammal Youth Group)
DESCRIPTION:Come and join a Bat Walk with the Nene Valley Bat Group as we look for bats around Stanwick Lakes\, and listen out for their echolocation sounds using bat detectors.\nThis bat walk is a Nene Valley Mammal Youth Group event and is designed for young people aged 11-17. Young people attending this event must be accompanied by their adult at all times. \nAccompanying adults do not need to book a separate ticket but will need to be named on the young person’s ticket – you can advise at booking stage. \nThe NVMYG has been formed to inspire young people (under age 30) to learn about mammals and take action to protect them. Young people will be able spend time outdoors\, meet like-minded people\, and develop their skills to become citizen scientists and active conservationists. The group has been set up in response to\, and with\, local young people who have a passion for nature and is part of the local network of the Mammal Society\, Britain’s leading charity devoted to the science-led conservation of mammals. \nAs this is a free event run by the Nene Valley Bat Group and Stanwick Lakes (Rockingham Forest Trust) we welcome a donation of £5 (cash) on the evening on the event.

SUMMARY:Wildlife Survey Skills: Harvest Mouse Monitoring (age 18-30)
DESCRIPTION:This event is designed for young people aged 18-30 in partnership with the Nene Valley Mammal Youth Group. \nJoin the team at Stanwick Lakes to take part in monitoring the harvest mouse population on the nature reserve as part of the national Harvest Mouse survey. Learn how to identify suitable habitat\, search for harvest mouse nests\, and collect valuable data that contributes to a national citizen science project. This is a great opportunity to develop practical wildlife survey skills\, connect with like-minded people\, and take positive action for conservation. Every survey helps improve our understanding of harvest mouse populations and helps us to protect the harvest mouse population at Stanwick Lakes. No previous ecological experience is required. \nFor more information about the national Harvest Mouse survey: https://mammal.org.uk/current-research/national-harvest-mouse-survey \nNormal parking charges apply. \nThe NVMYG has been formed to inspire young people (under age 30) to learn about mammals and take action to protect them. Young people will be able spend time outdoors\, meet like-minded people\, and develop their skills to become citizen scientists and active conservationists. The group has been set up in response to\, and with\, local young people who have a passion for nature and is part of the local network of the Mammal Society\, Britain’s leading charity devoted to the science-led conservation of mammals.\nFor more information\, visit: https://stanwicklakes.org.uk/mammal-group/

SUMMARY:Heritage Talk: Understanding Roman Northamptonshire
DESCRIPTION:Understanding Roman Northamptonshire \nA heritage talk by Dr Michael J Curtis \nNorthamptonshire occupies a central position within the landscape of Roman Britain\, yet its remarkable archaeological heritage is often overshadowed by more familiar Roman sites elsewhere in the country. This talk explores how the county was transformed following the Roman conquest\, revealing a landscape of thriving settlements\, prosperous villas\, extensive agricultural estates\, industrial production\, and an impressive network of roads linking communities across the province. \nDrawing upon archaeological discoveries from across Northamptonshire\, the presentation examines the development of towns and villages\, the lives of those who farmed the land\, practised crafts\, traded goods\, and worshipped their gods. It also considers the county’s role within wider economic and communication networks that connected Britain with the rest of the Roman Empire. \nFrom spectacular villa mosaics and rural temples to everyday objects recovered from excavations\, this talk highlights the rich archaeological evidence that allows us to reconstruct nearly four centuries of Roman occupation. Whether you are new to Roman archaeology or already have an interest in the period\, this presentation offers an engaging journey through one of Britain’s most important yet often overlooked Roman landscapes. \nSpeaker Bio: \nDr Michael J Curtis \nDr Michael J Curtis is an Honorary Fellow in the School of Heritage and Culture at the University of Leicester and co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of My Ancient World Learning Ltd\, a company specialising in the delivery of lifelong learning courses in archaeology\, ancient history\, and classical studies. He is a landscape and coastal archaeologist whose research focuses on the maritime landscapes of the Mediterranean during the Hellenistic and Roman periods\, the Roman maritime landscape of Britain\, and the Iron Age and Roman landscapes of his home county of Northamptonshire. He is co-editor of the Cretan Studies series\, New Approaches and Perspectives in the Study of Hellenistic\, Roman and Early Byzantine Crete\, published by Oxbow Books. He has published widely on Hellenistic and Roman Crete and regularly lectures on this and the archaeeology of Roman Britain.
