SUMMARY:Blacksmithing Workshop - For Young People (ages 12-17)
DESCRIPTION:Get fired up and step into the world of blacksmithing!\nThis hands-on taster workshop is a thrilling introduction to the ancient art of forging\, specially designed for young people. You’ll discover the basics of working with hot metal – heating\, shaping\, twisting\, and scrolling – and experience the excitement of creating something from scratch in a real forge. \nWhat You’ll Learn\n– Master basic blacksmithing techniques like heating and shaping.\n– Learn safety and tool use from a professional blacksmith.\n– Customize projects to suit your skill level \nWho is this course for?\nThis day is suitable for everyone. Blacksmithing is about technique and making sure the steel is heated to the right temperature before working it\, not about using heavy hammers and hitting the metal very hard! \nYour tutor for the day is John Wills\, who has been running his own heritage metalwork business for ten years and teaching since 2017. He specialises in making historical reproductions in copper\, brass\, tinplate and iron/steel for museums\, re-enactors\, TV\, and film. As a member of the Heritage Craft Association\, John is actively involved in promoting and preserving metalwork skills and traditions that would otherwise be lost. His blacksmith work has been used in Hollywood films and can be seen at historic sites around England. \nThe course is limited to just 4 participants\, so that each person has their own anvil to work on.\nAll tools\, materials\, and safety gear are provided – just bring your curiosity and wear sturdy\, hard-soled footwear and full length trousers.\nFree parking is including with each booking. \nImportant: Participants under 18 must be supervised by a responsible adult (18+). Please avoid wearing transition lenses or auto-darkening glasses.

SUMMARY:B17: A Wartime Tragedy Exhibition - February 2026
DESCRIPTION:Anniversary Exhibition \nTo mark the anniversary of a mid-air collision that occurred between two B17 Flying Fortress aircraft on the 22nd February 1944\, a one-day exhibition to commemorate this tragic event will be open to the public. \nSituated in The Solstice Suite in the Visitor Centre\, the exhibition will offer insights into the bravery and sacrifice of our Allied forces as well as the way of life in Northamptonshire during “The Big Week” and the united operations that followed throughout 1944. \nThe exhibition also explores the history of the 384th Bombardment Group at Grafton Underwood and highlights the dedication of their volunteers in fundraising and establishing a permanent museum on the airbase site. \nThrough personal stories and local heritage\, the exhibition celebrates the enduring legacy of the 384th and ensures this chapter of USAAF history is remembered. \nThis free to enter exhibition will be held in The Solstice Suite\, organised by the 384th Bombardment Group Museum . \nJoin us at 9am outside the Visitor Centre to be led on a short walk to the Stanwick Lakes memorial\, for a short reading and remembrance led by volunteers. The exhibition has been compassionately researched and curated by dedicated volunteers\, including the poignant additions of the journeys and lives of the airmen involved\, thanks to the unwavering support of the families in the US who graciously granted permission and blessings. \nWe are honoured to be supported in this exhibition by the team at The 384th Museum\, Grafton Underwood. \nAdmission is to the exhibition will be free\, although car parking charges for Stanwick Lakes still apply. \nThe exhibition will be open 10am – 3pm on Sunday 22nd February 2026. \nMemorial \n \nThis historic event holds great significance in both local and wartime history. \nA successful fundraising appeal in 2024 enabled Stanwick Lakes to construct a permanent memorial as a lasting tribute located in a peaceful\, reflective spot overlooking Brightwater Lake. \nTo visit the memorial\, follow the main pathway towards Sandmartin Bridge and the assault course. It’s just a few minutes walk from the visitor centre. \nTo find our more about our B17 heritage research and memorial journey\, visit our dedicated page here:  B-17 Exhibition: Virtual Gallery | Stanwick Lakes | Nature\, Heritage\, Adventure
