Shane Downer

Interim Chair | Heritage and strategic planning

Shane is one of the heritage specialists on the Board, joining RFT in 2022.

He is the Heritage and International Partnerships Officer at Milton Keynes City Council and has been in post since 2003, coordinating the strategic heritage programme across Milton Keynes. Through various Strategic City Plans he works with colleagues and local, national and international public, private and third sector partners to implement major heritage change for a current resident population of almost 300,000, and with over 200,000 heritage visitors a year to the six major heritage venues.

As Milton Keynes is set to almost double in population over the next thirty years, Shane coordinates the major building projects around new heritage, archive and museum provision including a New City Museum for 2027, a New City Archive by 2030, and refurbishment of other heritage and historic sites including currently the city’s 19th Century windmill!

Milton Keynes was designated as a new town in 1967 and Shane was part of the team who wrote the bid to secure City Status from Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.  2027 will therefore be the 60th birthday for ‘MK’ and he is part of the team implementing the newly revised Cultural Strategy and emerging ‘Design Heritage’ programme.

In his spare time, as well as supporting RFT’s heritage projects, Shane likes running and walking the hills with his dog, travel (he has explored many new towns across Europe!) and socialising with good food and company.
