SUMMARY:Tinsmithing workshops
DESCRIPTION:Course Overview\nThis critically endangered heritage craft is being kept alive at Stanwick Lakes — and you can be a part of it! Learn the skills of tin-smithing from one of the last tinsmiths in the country. \nTinplate – a thin sheet of iron or steel coated with pure tin – is strong\, lightweight\, durable\, food safe and resembles silver. During the 18th and 19th centuries it was ubiquitous in home\, work and military life\, with every town having its own “Tinman & Brazier.” Tin-smithing is now classified by the Heritage Crafts Association as critically endangered and at serious risk of no longer being practised in the UK. \nDuring the day you’ll learn the core processes – measuring\, cutting with tin-snips\, burring\, forming\, wiring\, seaming and soldering — and make a wall hanging candle sconce plus your choice of a pastry cutter\, a candle holder\, or cup to take home. No experience is needed; the course is suitable for adults of any ability\, limited to six participants. Teenagers 16+ are welcome with adult supervision. \nThe course takes place in a purpose-built oak framed craft barn at Stanwick Lakes\, a protected Nature Reserve and Wetland of International Importance covering 750 acres. \nParking is included in the ticket price. Tickets are £120 per person per one day workshop. Three workshops are available to book – Sunday 26th July\, Saturday 29th August or Sunday 30th August. \nBook now \nAbout the Tutor\nYour tutor is John Wills\, one of the last three professional tinsmiths in Britain. In 2022\, as part of a Heritage Crafts Association project to rescue tinsmithing\, he trained under master tinsmith Karl Schmidt (Dakota Tinworks\, USA) and subsequently built a new tinman & brazier workshop to keep the craft alive. He is a Yeoman of the Worshipful Company of Tinplate Workers Alias Wire Workers of the City of London. \nCancellation policy: Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 4 weeks before the course starts.

SUMMARY:Willow Weaving Workshop: Large Flower Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Course Overview\nLearn core basketry skills while creating an impressive large willow flower – perfect for walls\, fences\, patios\, or interior displays. \nThis course is especially valuable for beginners who want to build confidence before moving into basketry. \nYou’ll start by making a traditional slath\, just as you would when beginning a basket. Into this\, you’ll weave the flower’s centre\, gaining essential understanding of space\, control\, and tension. \nFrom there\, you’ll add petals in a style of your choice\, braid a strong stem\, and use a figure-of-eight weave to form expressive leaves. \nThis workshop brings together multiple foundation weaving techniques in one rewarding project – an excellent step towards more advanced work. \nThe course takes place in the Heritage Craft Barn at Stanwick Lakes\, a 750-acre protected Nature Reserve and Wetland of International Importance managed by Rockingham Forest Trust as an environmental charity. \nBook now \nCancellation policy: Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 4 weeks before the course starts.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Corn Dolly Crafting
DESCRIPTION:Course Overview\nIn this introductory workshop you will learn the traditional craft of corn dolly making\, a heritage skill rooted in the rhythms of the harvest and practiced across Britain and Europe for hundreds\, even thousands of years. \nYou will explore how these beautiful woven forms were traditionally created from the final sheaf of the harvest\, believed to hold the spirit of the crop through the winter and ensure fertility and a successful harvest the following year. \nYour workshop will begin with an introduction to the history\, cultural significance and regional variations of corn dollies\, before moving on to practical instruction. \nGuided by course leader Beckie Pallitt of Windhover Crafts\, you will learn the foundational techniques needed to create your own corn dolly inspired by traditional forms. \nThroughout the workshop\, you will be supported step-by-step\, developing skills in handling and preparing the straw\, shaping\, and binding. \nThis workshop offers a unique opportunity to connect with an endangered rural craft and gain insight into traditions that have been passed down through generations. By the end of the course\, you will take home your own handcrafted corn dollys along with the knowledge to continue practicing this rewarding skill. \nThe course itself takes place in and around the purpose built oak framed craft barn at Stanwick Lakes which is managed by Rockingham Forest Trust as an environmental charity. Stanwick Lakes is a protected Nature Reserve and a Wetland of International Importance\, covering 750 acres of open space with seven miles of paths\, a perfect inspiration to crafters and makers. \nAbout the tutor\nBeckie has been practising many crafts since an early age\, but recently took up teaching them as a way to pass on her knowledge and enthusiasm. \nShe has an interest in both traditional and contemporary crafts and believes strongly that everyone has a creative streak\, it just needs some encouragement to shine and so offers a relaxing session where you can learn new skills and come away with something beautiful made by you. \nThe course is suitable for beginners\, with no prior experience required. All materials and tools will be provided.\n16+ welcome with a fee-paying supervising adult. \nParking is included in the ticket price. \nCancellation Policy  \nCancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 4 weeks before the course starts. SUMMARY:Spoon Carving Workshop - One Day
DESCRIPTION:On this therapeutic one-day beginners’ course at Stanwick Lakes you will learn how to carve a spoon using basic wood carving techniques and tools. \nYou will begin by learning how to cleave wood and use an axe to produce your spoon blank. The rest of the day will be spent using a sloyd knife and a hook knife to carve to shape your individual home-made spoon. The course covers a selection of knife grips\, which will keep your carving under control as well as keeping you safe. Time will be spent looking at how the spoon develops in a 3-dimensional form\, covering the spoons ‘crook’\, bowl and handle to get a well-balanced and functioning spoon. \nWooden spoons like you will make have been carved for thousands of years and for most of the population\, were used as an eating utensil until relatively recently. ‘Spoon’ was originally an Anglo-Saxon word that meant ‘a chip of wood’. The oldest known wooden spoon in England is a ladle found at Glastonbury Lake Village dating to 250BC. Another notable find of wooden spoons are the personal spoons found on the wreck of the Mary Rose. These spoons may have been whittled by their owners. \nThe course takes place in and around the purpose built oak framed craft barn at Stanwick Lakes which is managed by Rockingham Forest Trust as an environmental charity. \nStanwick Lakes is a protected Nature Reserve and a Wetland of International Importance\, covering 750 acres of open space with seven miles of paths\, a perfect inspiration to crafters and makers. \nDuring your lunchtime you can enjoy the onsite cafés and visit the heritage museum or sit by a lake and watch the wildlife. \nTo find out more\, view dates and get tickets\, visit: Spoon Carving | Stanwick Lakes

SUMMARY:Blacksmithing Workshop - For Young People (ages 12-17)
DESCRIPTION:Get fired up and step into the world of blacksmithing!\nThis hands-on taster workshop is a thrilling introduction to the ancient art of forging\, specially designed for young people. You’ll discover the basics of working with hot metal – heating\, shaping\, twisting\, and scrolling – and experience the excitement of creating something from scratch in a real forge. \nWhat You’ll Learn\n– Master basic blacksmithing techniques like heating and shaping.\n– Learn safety and tool use from a professional blacksmith.\n– Customize projects to suit your skill level \nWho is this course for?\nThis day is suitable for everyone. Blacksmithing is about technique and making sure the steel is heated to the right temperature before working it\, not about using heavy hammers and hitting the metal very hard! \nYour tutor for the day is John Wills\, who has been running his own heritage metalwork business for ten years and teaching since 2017. He specialises in making historical reproductions in copper\, brass\, tinplate and iron/steel for museums\, re-enactors\, TV\, and film. As a member of the Heritage Craft Association\, John is actively involved in promoting and preserving metalwork skills and traditions that would otherwise be lost. His blacksmith work has been used in Hollywood films and can be seen at historic sites around England. \nThe course is limited to just 4 participants\, so that each person has their own anvil to work on.\nAll tools\, materials\, and safety gear are provided – just bring your curiosity and wear sturdy\, hard-soled footwear and full length trousers.\nFree parking is including with each booking. \nImportant: Participants under 18 must be supervised by a responsible adult (18+). Please avoid wearing transition lenses or auto-darkening glasses.

SUMMARY:Christmas Woodcarving Workshop - One Day
DESCRIPTION:You will learn the traditional craft of wood carving by hand which dates back thousands of years\, from when we first learned to make sharp tools. This one-day course is suitable for those starting out and also for carvers who would like to develop their skills further. \nFor beginners\, the day starts with the introduction of the tools and the techniques and materials used for hand carving wood. This will be followed by a small carving project to become familiar with the basic skills and then\, after lunch\, you will move on to a new project that involves creating a larger relief carving. \nThe day is run in a very flexible format and allows for more experienced carvers to develop their skills under the expert guidance of Pete\, your tutor. Green woodworking is an ancient craft long predating the coming of sawmills and kiln drying. This craft utilises the properties of unseasoned timber to create anything from a humble spoon to a grand timber framed house. Carved decoration is as old as the craft and examples can be seen in every church and historic building in England.
