Gemma Matin

Youth advocate and conservation

Gemma is a dedicated wildlife conservationist and educator with extensive experience across zoology, animal welfare, and environmental advocacy. Holding a BSc (Hons) in Zoology, she has built a career centred around the protection and understanding of wildlife, with a particular passion for ornithology and animal behaviour.

A trained falconer, Gemma has worked closely with birds of prey including owls, falcons, and eagles, honing specialist skills in avian handling and husbandry. Early in her career, she served as a zookeeper at Lincolnshire Wildlife Park, caring for a diverse range of species and deepening her practical knowledge of captive animal management. This was followed by conservation work with the RSPB, where she contributed to vital research on UK and African migratory birds, further cementing her commitment to global wildlife conservation.

In addition to her field and zoological work, Gemma brings valuable sector-wide insight through her role with the Pet Industry Federation, supporting pet businesses across the UK and representing animal welfare interests at governmental panels. Her engagement in policy discussions helps ensure that emerging legislation reflects high standards of welfare and responsible care.

For the past five years, Gemma has been shaping the next generation of animal professionals as an educator at a land-based college in Northamptonshire, teaching animal welfare and management. Through this role, she inspires students to pursue careers rooted in compassion, scientific understanding, and conservation ethics.

Beyond her professional pursuits, Gemma maintains a personal love of wildlife, literature, and the simple joys of home life. When not immersed in conservation or education, she can often be found curled up with a good book or baking something sweet.
