Heritage Finale Talk: West Cotton – Working at ‘Home’

10th May 2025 @ 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

£8.00 – £18.50

An overview: For five seasons, from the summer of 1985 to the autumn of 1989, with winter breaks, Andy and Pat Chapman were part of the excavation team at the deserted medieval hamlet of West Cotton, and the underlying prehistoric monuments.
During the week they lived on site in a caravan along with their two and, from 1986, three children, and dogs. Returning home to Northampton at the weekend for baths, and cooking and baking for the following week. This talk will tell the story of the excavation year by year from the viewpoint of a family working at ‘home’.

The speaker: Andy Chapman worked as a field archaeologist in Northamptonshire from the 1970s, specialising in prehistoric and medieval archaeology. Andy has worked to illustrate the outstanding and important results from excavations at Raunds and Stanwick from Neolithic monuments to the deserted medieval villages.
