Junior Rangers

Monthly meet-ups for young conservationists

Home > Junior Rangers
The Junior Rangers are an enthusiastic team of young conservationists who take practical action to help us look after Stanwick Lakes. The team of 12-19 year olds meet once a month to get outdoors, learn hands on conservation skills and make friends who are also passionate about nature.

Overview

For those who are interested in a career in conservation, the Junior Rangers is a fantastic way to take the first steps. Members of the team have gone on to study land-based courses at Moulton College, others are at university studying degrees in zoology, entomology, physical geography and oceanography, while on Junior Ranger has recently completed a year as a Youth Ambassador for the Mammal Society.

Tasks the team have undertaken include:

  • – Working as a team to make a bird viewing screen
  • – Taking part in the National Harvest Mouse Survey
  • – Building hibernaculum for reptiles
  • – Monitoring a water vole reintroduction
  • – Designing and illustrating a “Mammal Mysteries” leaflet

“Becoming a Junior Ranger at Stanwick lakes has helped lead me on to so many brilliant opportunities as well as giving me some important skills for understanding our natural environment. From learning tracking techniques such as identifying footprints to learning to what it’s like to be a ranger. It has given me such an important insight into conservation work and inspired me in so many ways and helped encourage me to attend university pursue an environmental career.”
