Whether you’re completely new to the craft or looking to refresh your skills, these sessions offer a relaxed introduction to traditional weaving techniques, with projects you can enjoy at home or in your garden.
Each workshop guides you through shaping, tension, and weaving, helping you create beautiful, practical, and decorative pieces while gaining confidence in this heritage craft.

A really good and informative course with lots of help in a lovely barn. Me and my sister have never done willow basket making and found we had plenty of help and encouragement…I really recommend a great day out with a lovely lunch in the café. Plenty of tea and coffee on hand as well.
What You’ll Learn
Materials & Selection: How to choose and combine flowers, foliage and grasses for colour, texture and balance.
Preparation: How to get your stems ready so everything holds its shape beautifully.
Construction: How to build your piece from scratch, attaching blooms securely as you go.
Finishing: How to layer, fill and style your finished piece so it looks just right.

Chaz Friend
Chaz Friend is the willow artist behind Wayside Willow, sharing the craft of willow weaving with schools, community groups and adults across the Midlands and beyond. After 24 years as a primary teacher, Chaz followed his passion for heritage crafts and has been teaching willow weaving since 2014.
Friendly, patient and endlessly enthusiastic about the possibilities of willow, Chaz brings warmth, humour and deep knowledge to every workshop he runs — creating a relaxed, encouraging environment where makers of all levels can thrive.
