Festive ‘Lates’ – Make a Corn Dolly Angel

Step into the festive spirit this winter as the Visitor Centre opens late for a cosy evenings of creativity, mulled wine, mince pies and twinkling lights. Our Festive Lates offer the chance to try your hand at something new. Each workshop is beginner-friendly, set in small groups, and designed to help you unwind, get creative, and make something special for the season.

Learn the art of straw plaiting to create your very own truly unique Corn Dolly Angel, woven from wheat straw. A heritage skill rooted in the rhythms of the harvest. This hand-crafted item can be your Christmas tree topper or gifted this festive season.

You will explore how these beautiful woven forms were traditionally created from the final sheaf of the harvest, believed to hold the spirit of the crop through the winter and ensure fertility and a successful harvest the following year. Your workshop will begin with an introduction to the history, cultural significance and regional variations of corn dollies, before moving on to practical instruction. Guided by course leader Beckie Pallitt of Windhover Crafts, you will learn the foundational techniques needed to create your own corn dolly inspired by traditional forms. Throughout the workshop, you will be supported step-by-step, developing skills in handling and preparing the straw, shaping, and binding
