Course Overview

A ‘live’ pottery decorating experience with Andy Mason at Stanwick Lakes. Come and enjoy the Japanese art of Raku Pottery Decoration. Since its 16th century beginnings, a pottery process that inevitably brings excitement and suspense.

Our workshops are designed at an introduction to intermediate level so no previous experience required, just an interest and willingness to participate and soak up the energy, art and alchemy of Raku!

Our courses takes place in and around the purpose built oak framed craft barn at Stanwick Lakes which is managed by Rockingham Forest Trust as an environmental charity.

Stanwick Lakes is a protected Nature Reserve and a Wetland of International Importance, covering 750 acres of open space with seven miles of paths, a perfect inspiration to crafters and makers.

During your lunchtime you can enjoy the onsite cafés and visit the heritage museum or sit by a lake and watch the wildlife.

Raku Pottery - Art and Alchemy

You’ll learn how to glaze and fire your pieces using time-honoured methods that combine artistry with a touch of alchemy. As your pots emerge from the smouldering ashes, you’ll see the magic of Raku revealed — glowing metallics, deep rich colours, and subtle, earthy tones unique to each firing.

Andy will guide you through a variety of creative glazing techniques, sharing insights drawn from years of practice and passion for both the ancient ritual and modern expression of Raku. This workshop is ideal for anyone who wants to experience the essence of Raku pottery.

This hands-on workshop explores alternative Raku firing methods that produce striking and unpredictable surface effects. You’ll work with a range of techniques – including horsehair, copper wire, and obvara (also known as Baltic Raku) – to create pots that are distinctive, expressive, and truly one-of-a-kind.

Like traditional Raku, the process is full of energy and surprise, but here the focus is on texture, pattern and creative experimentation. Andy will guide you step by step through each technique, sharing his extensive knowledge and passion for this exciting art form.

Tea Bowl & Japanese Inspired Lunch

Explore a range of expressive glazing techniques that blend traditional Raku practices with Andy’s own creative approach. After glazing, the thrill begins – your piece will undergo a rapid, dramatic kiln firing to reveal a bowl unlike any other.

To celebrate the moment, you’ll enjoy a Japanese-inspired stir-fry meal served in your newly fired vessel – a beautiful and meaningful way to experience your creation in use.

During lunch, Andy will offer a brief demonstration of the traditional Japanese tea ceremony, adding cultural depth and a contemplative note to the experience, before you’ll return to the studio to glaze and fire a second piece in the afternoon, allowing you to expand your technique and new found skills.

The course leader Andy Mason has developed his technical skills and knowledge over many years, sharing his enthusiasm, his inspiration and insight into the ancient rituals and contemporary practice of Raku.
