Construction Starts on New Accessible Play Area

There’s a lot about to happen this September in our adventure playground. Work gets underway on exciting new accessible play equipment!

We’re always looking for ways to improve our facilities and make Stanwick Lakes a welcoming place for everyone. This latest development is part of our ongoing commitment to inclusive play, helping more children and families enjoy the adventure playground together.

The new equipment will include wheelchair-accessible towers connected by a raised walkway, along with a slide and sensory play features. Designed with accessibility in mind, the towers can be reached by ramps and will be suitable for wheelchairs, prams and pushchairs. Improvements are also being made to the ground surrounding the equipment to help make the area easier to access and enjoy.

These additions are the latest stage in the continuing development of our adventure playground following the devastating arson attack that destroyed much of the original equipment five years ago. Since then, we have worked hard to rebuild and improve the play area, creating new opportunities for children of all abilities to play, explore and have fun together.

The new equipment builds on other accessible features that have already been added to the playground. Since October 2024, visitors have been able to enjoy a wheelchair-accessible roundabout and an accessible swing for older children. Once complete, the latest additions will provide even more opportunities for children with additional needs to experience adventure play and discover something new.

None of this would be possible without the support of our visitors and funding partners. Through fundraising, donations and grant funding, we have been able to continue making meaningful improvements to the site that benefit our community and visitors alike.

While the installation is taking place, the adventure playground will remain open, although some areas will have restricted access for safety reasons. We appreciate everyone’s patience while the work is completed and look forward to welcoming families to enjoy the new equipment when it opens at the end of September.

These latest improvements have been made possible through visitor donations and a grant of £22,760 from the Mick George Community Fund, administered by GrantScape. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has helped us continue improving Stanwick Lakes and making it a place where everyone can enjoy spending time outdoors.

We can’t wait to see children and families enjoying the new facilities and creating new memories at Stanwick Lakes in the months and years ahead.
