Thrilled to Welcome Nick Wilson and the 50at50 Campaign to Stanwick Lakes
We are absolutely delighted to share some truly exciting news here at Stanwick Lakes. Disabled war veteran, wheeled adventurer, and accessibility campaigner Nick Wilson has chosen us as one of his partner venues for his landmark 50at50 campaign – and we could not be more proud to be part of it. You can read the full details in Nick’s official press release here.
Nick’s story is one of extraordinary determination and purpose. A former soldier turned passionate accessibility advocate, he has dedicated himself to proving that the great outdoors belongs to everyone – regardless of mobility. This year, in the year he turns 50, Nick will complete 50km sections of trails across the UK, the United States, Austria and Dubai, all while championing a cause that is close to our hearts: making nature truly accessible.
What Is the 50at50 Campaign?
The 50at50 campaign is unlike most “epic adventure” challenges you might have seen. Rather than culminating in a single spectacular feat and fading from memory, Nick’s mission is to leave a lasting, practical legacy. The campaign is raising £150,000 to fund and donate up to eight all-terrain powerchairs to outdoor charities and visitor destinations across the UK – giving disabled people and wounded veterans the equipment they need to explore the countryside independently.
As Nick puts it himself: “Too many adventures end at inspiration. 50at50 is about building the kit, the capability and the pathway so disabled people and wounded veterans can go further than ever thought possible – not just watch someone else do it.”
We couldn’t agree more. And we are honoured that Nick has chosen Stanwick Lakes as one of the recipient venues for this life-changing equipment.
What This Means for Stanwick Lakes
Thanks to the 50at50 campaign, Stanwick Lakes will receive an all-terrain powerchair – a piece of equipment that will genuinely transform the experience of visiting our site for people with mobility challenges. Our paths, wildlife habitats and heritage spaces have always been something we want as many people as possible to enjoy. This chair will help us make that aspiration real.
We are particularly excited about the independence this will create – allowing individuals and families to explore our grounds together, at their own pace, with confidence. That sense of freedom in the outdoors is something everyone deserves, and we are thrilled to be in a position to offer it more widely.
Billie Passchier, Trust Director at Rockingham Forest Trust, said: “Stanwick Lakes is incredibly grateful and excited to be a recipient of an all-terrain powerchair through the Disabled Adventurer’s 50at50 campaign. This will make a real difference to our visitors, enabling more people to explore our paths, wildlife and heritage spaces in a way that simply hasn’t been possible before. We’re particularly excited about the independence this creates – giving individuals and families the confidence to experience the outdoors together. It’s a powerful step towards making Stanwick Lakes a place that can be enjoyed more fully by everyone, and we’re proud to be part of a campaign that delivers such meaningful, lasting impact.”
Follow Nick’s Journey
The 50at50 adventure kicks off in April, with Nick tackling 50km sections of the King Charles III Coastal Trail along the south and east of England. From there, the campaign travels to the United States, Austria and beyond – all documented on film. Nick and his team will be live-streaming sections of the journey, and his route will be mapped so that others can follow and even join in.
We’ll be cheering him on every step of the way, and we hope you will too. Find out more about Nick’s mission, donate, or follow his progress at www.disabledadventurer.com – and read the full 50at50 press release here.
Here’s to more people discovering the joy of the outdoors – together.
